The commission worked with the Charleston County School District to secure Laing Middle School as the worship location and made preparations for the first service. In April, a Lowcountry boil was held in the East Cooper airport with about 200 persons attending. On Pentecost Sunday (May 27, 2007), Palmetto Presbyterian NCD held its first service, followed by a barbecue dinner on the school grounds. During the chartering service, Dr. Fitze was installed as pastor and fifteen elders were ordained and installed. The Reverend Gary Bullard, pastor of MPPC (Palmetto’s “mother church”), preached the sermon for the chartering service, and the charter members were recognized. Come into his presence with singing” (Psalm 100:1-2) The Sanctuary Choir leads our expressions of praise at the later morning worship service, as well as at special services. They strive to present an eclectic variety of music from classical to contemporary. This choir is open to all from high school age to seniors. No audition is required! The only requirements are a desire to make a joyful noise, to lead in worship, to commit to faithful service in worship services and rehearsals, and, of course, some ability to sing on pitch. We have strong leaders in each choir section, so you do not have to be a trained singer to participate in choir. We also use many resources to assist members in learning the music in addition to our weekly rehearsals. Rehearsals are held Thursdays, 6:30 – 8:00 PM. Childcare is available with advance notice. It is an intergenerational worship service that includes a homily and music that engages all ages. Throughout the year, fellowship events are planned in conjunction with Second Sunday and are inclusive of everyone. The 11:00 a.m. service can best be described as traditional, with a heart and a sense of humor. The service has a classic structure, but there is plenty of warmth, vitality, and laughter. How long does the worship service last? The 9:00 a.m. service lasts about 45 minutes, and the 11:00 a.m. service lasts about one hour. What do people wear? Most people dress smart casual. Harman is originally from Nebraska and has built her career at the intersection of education, restorative justice, and faith-based leadership. She earned her Bachelor of Arts from the University of Nebraska–Lincoln and her Master of Arts in Religious Arts from Emmanuel Christian Seminary at Milligan. Jill is currently completing her Doctor of Education (EdD) in Interdisciplinary Leadership at Creighton University, where her research centers on the mentorship experiences of female clergy in the United Methodist Church. Jill has served as an Associate Pastor at Fremont First United Methodist Church and as an Adjunct Professor at Creighton, teaching courses in restorative practices, leadership, and community-building. With over seven years of restorative justice experience, she has facilitated mediations, led circles, and consulted with schools, nonprofits, and community organizations. She is the Associate Director of the Magis Catholic Teacher Corps, supporting teacher formation, community living, and mission-driven leadership. Jill is also a 2024–2026 Sinai and Synapses Fellow, committed to fostering dialogue between scientific and religious communities. The purpose of the service is to give thanks to God for the gift of the life of the one who has died and witness to our faith in God's continuing gift of life to us in Jesus Christ. Although the reality of death is acknowledged in the service, even more importantly the reality of our hope in Jesus Christ is affirmed.
